The Owl Service by Alan Garner, is–interesting. Alison makes her own fun, leads Gwin to find the owl service and, crucially, makes something of it, literally. Alison and Roger are spending their holidays in Wales. What The Owl Service does is reenact this story in modern times. I'd consciously put off writing about the Owl Service because I really didn't know where to begin. It all begins with the scratching in the ceiling. I first read Alan Garner's The Owl Service as a child and I remember that it scared me silly, so it was with some trepidation that I picked it up this morning to re-read it. From the moment Alison discovers the dinner service in the attic, with its curious pattern of floral owls, a chain of events is set in progress that is to effect everybody's lives. Over time and with the benefit of both office and field experience, the Service began the question the effectiveness existing Forest Practice Rules to avoid “take” of Northern Spotted Owls. I'd been to Café Oto a couple of weeks before this free in-store gig for a reading and Q&A with Rob Young, author of the recently published tome Electric Eden, the subtitle of which is 'Unearthing Britain's visionary music'. The Owl Service, by Alan Garner, is one of the greatest fantasy novels ever written. With percussion ricocheting amongst the speakers, Pram's sixth album, The Museum of Imaginary Animals presents itself as a curious entity. They are not brother and sister, but their parents are married. I loved Alan Garner's books as a child and his name was the first that came into my head when I thought about the Childhood Favourites Reading.
